Canon announced today their new flagship PowerShot compact digital camera: PowerShot G10 will be launch very soon. G10 is a replacement of the current G9 model. At first look, the spec is impressive. It offer wide-angle imaging, 35mm viewing angle equivalent of a 28-140mm lens( with optical Image Stabilizer). 14.7 Megapixel sensor with raw shooting mode. Today I bring you a quick “refresher” of how to take care of your camera.

If you just brought your first compact digital camera yesterday, or you don’t really know how digital camera work except “set to Automatic” and “just press that button”…..then make sure you click the link at the bottom of this article.

Just come across this article, it shows a few good tips on how to take care of your compact digital camera. Yes, they are common sense, but many people do miss them. Things like: keep it dry, keep it clean, always keep it in a camera bag when not use, power off the camera before remove memory card. Keep it away from magnetic, vibration…etc.

Let me add a few tips myself:

• -          I also like to take the batteries out from the camera when it is not use.  I always fully charge the batteries the night before I need to use the camera, quick test if the batteries and camera work ok. Then I remove the batteries until the time when I actually to use the camera.  Charge and bring a backup battery pack is always good.
• -          Always have a piece of microfiber camera lens cloth handy with you. (Lot of babies likes to stick their fingers on the zoom lens when you point the camera at them).
• -          Always…always… put the wrist strap on when use. Lot of people forgets them. Compact digital cameras are compact, they are so small. There is nothing more worst and heart breaking when someone accidently bump on you and you drop the camera on the floor (or, asking Mr. A on the street to take a picture for you and your family together and the next second seeing him drop the camera because he did not have the wrist strap on).

The first compact camera was produced by the Japanese manufacturer Konica in 1968, called Konica C35. Plastic film was the media used to take picture. No digital, no live preview. And it was a manual focus camera. It was until 1977, when Konica produced C35 AF, the first compact camera with autofocus feature. (Can you imagine taking picture without autofocus feature?) The marketplace for this type of small, portable camera begins to growth non-stop. More and more camera companies joined marketplace (Ricoh, Olympus, Minolta…and more).
